Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present a model of global citizenship education in lower secondary schools. The research method is a mixed-methods exploratory design (qualitative–quantitative). In the qualitative section, the thematic analysis method was employed, and in the quantitative section, a descriptive–survey approach was applied. The qualitative population consisted of academic experts in the fields of educational management, higher education management, and educational technology, as well as principals and teachers of lower secondary schools. The quantitative population included social studies teachers from nineteen districts of boys’ and girls’ lower secondary schools (public and private) in Tehran. The qualitative sample size, based on the principle of theoretical saturation, was 14 individuals selected using the snowball sampling method. The quantitative sample size was 202 individuals determined according to the Krejcie and Morgan table, using stratified sampling. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews in the qualitative section and a researcher-made questionnaire in the quantitative section. Content analysis of the interviews was performed using coding methods (basic, organizing, and overarching themes), along with structural equation modeling. The results of the study showed that the factors influencing global citizenship education in lower secondary schools were identified in the form of six main factors, twenty sub-factors, eight dimensions, and fifty-three components. Ultimately, the dimensions and components, with a coefficient of 0.772, had a greater impact on global citizenship education for students than the main factors.
