A Sociological Explanation of the Relationship Between Social Indifference and the Propensity for Development (Economic and Social) Among Citizens of Karaj

Abstract

This study aimed to provide a sociological explanation of the relationship between social indifference and the propensity for economic and social development and to examine the effects of social indifference on different dimensions of development propensity among citizens of Karaj. This applied study employed a descriptive-survey design. The statistical population consisted of all residents of Karaj County aged 15 years and older, from whom 383 participants were selected based on Cochran’s formula using multistage cluster sampling. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire and standardized instruments. Social indifference was assessed through indifference toward oneself, indifference toward the social situation, meaninglessness, and disillusionment, whereas propensity for development comprised economic development, social development, social participation, empathy and cooperation, change and innovation, and achievement motivation. Face validity was used to evaluate validity, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were calculated to assess reliability. Correlation analyses and structural equation modeling were applied for inferential data analysis. Social indifference was significantly and negatively correlated with propensity for social development (r=-0.382, p<0.001), social participation (r=-0.213, p<0.001), empathy and cooperation (r=-0.181, p=0.001), and achievement motivation (r=-0.175, p=0.002), whereas its relationships with propensity for economic development and change and innovation were not significant. Structural equation modeling demonstrated a significant negative direct effect of social indifference on overall propensity for development (β=-0.245, p<0.001). Significant negative indirect effects were also observed on social development (β=-0.158), social participation (β=-0.138), empathy and cooperation (β=-0.207), change and innovation (β=-0.139), and achievement motivation (β=-0.194). However, the effect on economic development was not statistically significant (β=-0.074, p=0.063). The findings indicate that greater social indifference is associated with a lower propensity for development, particularly in its social, participatory, cooperative, and motivational dimensions. Accordingly, reducing social indifference, strengthening social bonds, enhancing civic participation, and promoting responsibility and achievement motivation may facilitate the formation of more development-oriented attitudes and behaviors among citizens.
